American billionaire Elon Musk has filed a lawsuit against OpenAI, the developer of ChatGPT, alleging that the company has violated its founding principle to develop artificial intelligence (AI) for the benefit of humanity, the Courthouse News Service reports.
Allegations Against OpenAI and Microsoft
Musk contends that OpenAI, once envisioned as an independent entity dedicated to advancing AI for humanitarian purposes, has effectively become a subsidiary of Microsoft. He accuses OpenAI of prioritizing profit over the welfare of humanity, citing its collaboration with Microsoft and subsequent withholding of the source code for its technology.
The lawsuit names OpenAI president Greg Brockman and CEO Sam Altman as defendants, alongside Microsoft. Musk is seeking legal action to compel Microsoft to cease profiting from OpenAI's AI technology and to maintain the original open-source code as agreed upon.
Musk raises concerns over GPT-4, a forthcoming AI model designed to operate autonomously at a human cognitive level. Despite being slated for release in March 2023, GPT-4 remains a closed model, contrary to the transparency and openness advocated by Musk and the original ethos of OpenAI.
Commercialization Over Humanitarianism
Musk argues that the decision to keep GPT-4's internal details proprietary serves commercial interests rather than benefiting humanity. He asserts that OpenAI's collaboration with Microsoft aims to maximize profits rather than uphold the founding principles of open AI for societal good.
Critique of OpenAI's Leadership and Governance
In his lawsuit, Musk criticizes the composition of OpenAI's board, noting a lack of scientific and technical expertise among its members. He highlights a shift from the organization's initial non-profit structure to a profit-driven approach under new leadership, with Microsoft exerting significant influence.
