Following a government decree on time calculation procedures, Kazakhstan will transition to a single time zone (UTC+5) at 12 a.m. on March 1. This change will affect the cities of Astana, Almaty, and Shymkent, along with the Abai, Akmola, Almaty, Zhambyl, Zhetisu, Karagandy, Kostanai, Pavlodar, North Kazakhstan, Turkistan, Ulytau and East Kazakhstan regions, which will adjust their local time by one hour.
The move towards a unified time zone in Kazakhstan was based on recommendations from a working group of Kazakh scientists and experts focusing on time calculation issues. This group, established in April 2023, was formed in response to public requests for a more suitable time zone. The group included representatives from scientific institutes, medical universities, government bodies, and Parliament, among other institutions.
Over a year, the working group, which included experts from various fields such as medicine, physiology, geography, and metrology, researched the establishment of a more suitable time zone for Kazakhstan. They concluded that transitioning to a single time zone, UTC+5, was the most suitable and optimal choice, allowing most regions of Kazakhstan to operate at a time closest to their natural time.
It is worth noting that 175 nations operate in a single time zone, while only 22 countries use two or more time zones.
