Two years ago on February 24, Russia launched a full-scale invasion invasion of Ukraine. To commemorate the anniversary, the United States imposed sanctions on over 500 targets linked to Russia and enforced new export restrictions on close to 100 entities for their support to Russia, marking the largest single batch of penalties since the conflict’s onset.
The war resulted in the loss of at least 10,582 lives, including 5,017 men, 3,093 women, and 587 children since February 24, 2022.
The conflict has taken a severe toll on civilians, with the death toll exceeding 10,582, including men, women, and children, and tens of thousands more injured. The United Nations has reported alarming displacement figures, with nearly 6.5 mn Ukrainians seeking refuge worldwide, and an additional 3.7 mn displaced within the country.
Despite global efforts, the prospects for peace remain dim as both parties continue to push for divergent goals. Kyiv is demanding the renunciation of territorial claims, the withdrawal of Russian forces, and compensation for damages. Conversely, Moscow is insisting on Ukraine’s neutrality, non-alignment, and the safeguarding of the rights of Russian-speaking citizens.
The past two years have seen several pivotal moments that shaped the trajectory of the war:
- Special Military Operation: Putin’s declaration of a “special military operation” in Ukraine sparked worldwide condemnation and led to a series of sanctions.
- Kyiv Offensive: The initial advances by Russian forces towards Kyiv were met with robust resistance, leading to allegations of war crimes in areas such as Irpin and Bucha.
- Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant: The control of the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant by Russian forces raised fears of a potential nuclear disaster.
- Grain Agreement: A pact in Istanbul enabled the resumption of grain exports from Ukrainian ports, providing temporary relief amidst the conflict.
- Partial Mobilization in Russia: Putin authorized partial mobilization, drafting 300,000 Russians for military service, indicating a significant escalation.
- Unilateral Annexation: Russia’s unilateral annexation of Ukrainian regions further heightened tensions, eliciting condemnation from the international community.
- Escalations and Retreats: The conflict’s fluid dynamics and shifting fronts have been characterized by various incidents, including explosions, withdrawals, and offensives.
The conflict has attracted global attention and involvement, with countries like the United States offering substantial military aid and diplomatic support to Ukraine. However, the resolution of the crisis remains challenging, with geopolitical interests and regional dynamics complicating peace efforts.
