Islam Karimov, born on January 30, 1938, in Samarkand, Uzbekistan, U.S.S.R., and passed away on September 2, 2016, in Tashkent, Uzbekistan, was a Uzbek politician who assumed the presidency of Uzbekistan in 1991. Karimov obtained engineering and economics degrees from the Central Asian Polytechnic and the Tashkent Institute of National Economy. Subsequently, he became a member of the Academy of Sciences in Uzbekistan. Initially working as an aircraft engineer from 1961 to 1966, Karimov transitioned to government service in 1966, taking on the role of an economic planner for the Uzbek state planning office.
