The current status of measles in Tajikistan is firmly under control, with no new cases reported in the past month, states Navruz Jafarov, a representative from the Ministry of Health and Social Protection of the Population of the Republic of Tajikistan. The successful containment of measles is attributed to the ongoing vaccination efforts conducted by the department, which annually organizes National Measles and Chickenpox Vaccination Days throughout the country.
Measles, characterized by symptoms such as high fever, respiratory inflammation, cough, red and watery eyes, and a distinctive sequential rash, has been effectively eliminated in Tajikistan through widespread vaccination. The rash typically appears behind the ears, on the face, and neck on the first day, progresses to the upper chest and arms on the second day, and eventually spreads to the lower part of the body, including the legs, on the third day.
The measles virus is transmitted through the air from an infected person to susceptible individuals who have not been timely immunized according to the national calendar. The contagious period extends from four days before the onset of the red rash to four days after. It is crucial to promptly isolate the patient during this period and provide suitable conditions for recovery. The entire infectious period of measles ranges from 7 to 18 days.
"The only way to prevent measles infection is vaccination against the disease. The vaccine used in Tajikistan is a complex vaccine against both measles and chickenpox,” highlights Navruz Jafarov. The immunization schedule in the country involves two doses, with the first administered at one year of age and the second at six years. Jafarov emphasized the importance of children receiving both doses to ensure comprehensive protection.
