The Vice-Speaker of the Russian State Duma, Pyotr Tolstoy, has called for the establishment of Russian-language schools in Uzbekistan funded by the income generated by migrants, RIA Novosti reports.
Tolstoy emphasizes that the Russian language should serve as the language of inter-ethnic communication across all former Soviet republics: “The Russian language should be the language of interethnic communication on the territory of all former Soviet republics. Unfortunately, today Russia is in a passive position regarding migrants.”
As per Tolstoy, it is crucial to develop a system of Russian schools in the countries of the former USSR republics. Currently, the Russian language is primarily used as the language of international communication only in Belarus, Kazakhstan, and Kyrgyzstan.
However, Tolstoy argues that countries like Armenia, Uzbekistan, Tajikistan, and others lack a similar infrastructure. He proposes the construction of Russian-language schools in these nations to revive the Soviet integration system that suffered in the 90s. Importantly, Tolstoy suggests financing these initiatives independently, utilizing the income sent back to their home countries by citizens working in Russia.
