Responding to the president's directive, Saida Mirziyoyeva visited the region where a staggering 450 children were admitted to hospitals with various health concerns. Accompanying her on this mission were Komil Allamjonov, the Head of the Department of Information Policy, and Odil Abdurakhmanov, the Head of the Department of Social Development, both integral parts of the president's office.
Their firsthand assessment of the situation at the hospital revealed some uplifting news—most of the children were in good spirits and on a gradual path to recovery, with many having been reunited with their families. This gave some solace to the concerned parents, with whom the delegation held candid conversations.
To address this alarming situation, a comprehensive meeting was convened with the heads of various sectors, including healthcare, the sanitary-epidemiological service, education, and the prosecution. During this session, the progress of the investigation was a central topic of discussion.
Saida Mirziyoyeva made a crucial revelation, stating that the investigation is currently in progress, with close personal oversight. Additionally, the Namanhan prosecutor's office has initiated a criminal case, which has been referred to the General Prosecutor's Office of the Republic of Uzbekistan for further examination.
This concerning incident stemmed from the hospitalization of 69 children from nine kindergartens and two schools in Chust District, where symptoms included elevated body temperatures, diarrhea, and abdominal pain.
The cause was suspected to be the administration of "Antistrumin" No. 100 (potassium iodide) as part of a nationwide campaign to iodize children, which commenced recently. Worryingly, reports of children's deteriorating health have emerged from other regions, including the capital, Tashkent.
The Andijan Region authorities have similarly reported the hospitalization of 12 children who had received "Antistrumin."
