Turkey has announced a change in its ambassador to Afghanistan, marking the end of Ambassador Jihad Erginay's term of service. The announcement came during a meeting between Jihad Erginay and the acting Foreign Minister of the Taliban, Amir Khan Muttaki. Both diplomats expressed their hope for enduring friendship between the Afghan and Turkish peoples, Sputnik Afghanistan reported on September 1.
Ambassador Jihad Erginay, who had been serving in Afghanistan for the past two years during the Taliban's rule, played a pivotal role in establishing a strong diplomatic relationship between Turkey and the Taliban. Under his tenure, Turkey has become the world leader in the frequency of interactions with the Taliban.
However, one significant change is that the successor to Ambassador Erginay will no longer hold the title of ambassador but will serve as a chargé d'affaires. This change is attributed to the Taliban's stance on foreign diplomats. The emir, as the head of the state, has refused to accept foreign diplomats directly and instead accredits them through the Foreign Ministry.
Chargé d'affaires, a term used to denote a lower-ranking diplomat who represents their country in the absence of an ambassador, will now be responsible for maintaining Turkey's diplomatic presence in Afghanistan. This shift signifies the need for adaptive and unconventional diplomatic approaches in the face of evolving international relations.
Turkey has historically maintained a significant presence in Afghanistan, and this latest development reflects its determination to adapt to the changing political dynamics in the region.
Earlier Daryo reported that the Lapis Lazuli project encompasses a transportation network spanning multiple countries, connecting Afghanistan, Turkmenistan, Azerbaijan, Georgia, and Turkey via railways and highways. It aims to link Turgundi in Afghanistan to Turkmenbashi's Caspian port, extending through Baku, Tbilisi, Poti, and Batumi in Georgia, ultimately reaching Ankara and Istanbul in Turkey.
