In a significant triumph against terrorism, Kazakhstan's security agencies have successfully thwarted a radical group's plans to carry out terrorist attacks within the country. The announcement was made by Yermek Sagimbayev, the Chairman of the National Security Committee (NSC), during a meeting with President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev on August 28. The radical group had been effectively neutralized, averting a potentially catastrophic situation.
Chairman Sagimbayev briefed President Tokayev on a range of counter-terrorism initiatives and accomplishments carried out by the NSC. The security agencies had initiated seven pre-trial investigations related to terrorist crimes and achieved the conviction of three extremists, indicating a resolute stance against those who posed threats to national security. To strengthen the nation's defenses against terrorism, the NSC Anti-Terrorist Center conducted a staggering 103 exercises aimed at enhancing counter-terrorism measures.
Sagimbayev's report encompassed various aspects of security, including criminal activities, arms trafficking, drug trade, and cyber threats. Notably, the NSC had successfully suppressed the activities of five socially dangerous criminal groups, dismantled two illegal weapons circulation channels, and confiscated a substantial cache of illicit materials, which included 59 weapons, three grenades, and 3,339 rounds of ammunition.
The Chairman also highlighted the agency's efforts in tackling drug trafficking, revealing that seven drug laboratories had been disrupted. Moreover, eight international and regional drug trafficking networks had been dismantled, resulting in the seizure of over 660 kilograms of narcotics and a staggering 17 tons of precursor chemicals used in drug production.
In the realm of border security, the NSC's vigilance led to the detection of 4,257 individuals involved in illegal migration and border violations. The agency's proactive measures also prevented the movement of illegal currency and goods valued at more than 3.8 bn tenge (approximately $8.2 mn). Furthermore, the successful interception of 120 attempts to transport weapons, ammunition, and drugs underscored the NSC's commitment to safeguarding the nation's integrity.
Cybersecurity emerged as another critical facet of Kazakhstan's defense strategy. The NSC reported repelling more than 36 mn cyber-attacks and 866 Distributed Denial of Service (DDoS) attacks on the country's critical infrastructure, reflecting the agency's robust efforts to ensure information security in the digital age.
After receiving the comprehensive report covering the third quarter of 2023, President Tokayev issued specific instructions to further fortify the national security agencies' activities. The resolute actions taken by Kazakhstan's security agencies not only signal the government's unwavering dedication to preserving the safety of its citizens but also emphasize the nation's stance against terrorism and other threats to its stability.
