During the online summit of the heads of state of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) on July 4, Uzbekistan's President Shavkat Mirziyoyev emphasised the need for constructive dialogue to address challenges in the environment, food security, and energy security. He proposed several initiatives to enhance cooperation within the SCO and strengthen its role in the regional agenda.
One of Mirziyoyev's proposals was to create a common space for trade, industrial, and technological cooperation, focusing on industries of the future such as digitalization, robotics, AI, and biotechnology. He suggested adopting a program for the new economic dialogue of the SCO to facilitate collaboration in these areas.
Additionally, Mirziyoyev advocated for the creation of a transport interconnectedness map to identify logistical bottlenecks and prioritise measures and projects for building an integrated system within the SCO countries.
The Uzbek President also emphasised the importance of environmental projects and green technologies, proposing the development of a joint plan for their promotion. He suggested integrating this plan into the Green Belt program for the Year of Ecology in the SCO space.
Mirziyoyev called for increased cooperation among SCO member states on climate change adaptation and decarbonization. This would involve the adoption of alternative energy sources like solar and wind power, as well as the implementation of smart agriculture and water conservation practices.
During the summit, the heads of the SCO states approved a strategy for economic development until 2030 and welcomed Iran as a new member of the bloc. They also signed agreements to expand cooperation in the economy and digital transformation.
