Full-scale conflict between Ukraine and Russia and its consequences are the main factors that have negatively affected the Global Peace Index as a study by the Institute for Economics and Peace shows. When calculating the index, experts look at a country's involvement in armed conflicts, analyse the human rights situation, and take into account military expenditures.
Europe is not as peaceful as it was 15 years ago. European leaders, according to experts, should draw conclusions. "If back then (in 2014) European countries had united and made it clear what would happen in the event of further invasion, I don't think we would be in the position we are in today," states Steven Killelea, founder of the Institute for Economics and Peace.
Both Russia and Ukraine currently rank among the top ten countries with the lowest peace index. The study covers a total of 163 nations. Ukraine is ranked 157th, and Russia is ranked 158th.
Nevertheless, despite the war in Ukraine, Europe remains the most peaceful region on the planet. Seven out of the top ten most peaceful countries are located in the Old Continent.
Iceland has held the first place for 16 consecutive years. Besides Iceland, the list includes Denmark, Ireland, Austria, Portugal, Slovenia, and Switzerland.
