Former US President Donald Trump claimed in an interview with Fox News that he collaborated with Russian President Vladimir Putin to initiate the process of denuclearization of both countries.
Trump expressed his concerns about the current state of affairs, stating that the United States is facing the most perilous period in its history due to the risk of nuclear war.
In a previous interview with Fox News in 2019, Trump expressed his desire to eliminate nuclear weapons and stressed the importance of Russia and China also taking steps in that direction. Reports from The Washington Post and CNN indicated that Trump had instructed White House officials to lay the groundwork for a future trilateral nuclear arms control agreement involving Russia and China.
Additionally, CNN reported that the US administration was working on a new agreement to replace the existing treaty between Moscow and Washington that aimed to further reduce and limit strategic offensive weapons.
At the end of February, Russia suspended its participation in the nuclear arms reduction agreement. Putin cited reasons such as the inability to conduct thorough investigations under the agreement, unanswered requests for inspections of suspicious sites, and rejections based on official reasons.
In light of the ongoing war, which does not seem to reach an end in the near future, the existence of nuclear bombs is a direct threat to global security.
