Rescuers in northern India recovered more bodies of mountaineers on Friday (October 7), bringing the confirmed death toll to 19 from an avalanche in the Himalayas, the chief of Northern Uttarakhand state said.
The group, consisting of 34 trainees preparing for high altitude navigation who were accompanied by seven instructors, was caught in the avalanche at 8.45 a.m. (0315 GMT) on Tuesday (October 4).
Persisting bad weather and snow complicated rescuers' efforts to reach the mountaineers, a police official said. Rescue operations are continuing to search for 10 other people, according to local media.
The group had been making its way back from a mountain peak, Draupadi ka Danda-II, at 5,670 meters (18,602 ft), when the avalanche struck.
