Kazakhstan’s steel production dropped by 12.2% year-on-year in June 2025, totaling 358,790 tons, according GMK Center, citing data from the Statistical Committee of the Ministry of Economy, cited by Kallanish. The figure also marked a 1.4% decrease compared to May.

Flat steel production saw a particularly steep decline, falling by 53.2% year-on-year to 225,460 tons. Month-on-month, flat steel output also slipped by 1.4%.
Despite the June downturn, Kazakhstan's steel production for the first half of 2025 rose by 2.3% compared to the same period in 2024, reaching 2.14mn tons. However, rolled metal production declined by 10% year-on-year in the same period, amounting to 1.43mn tons.
In 2024, the country increased its annual steel production by 9.5%, reaching 4.17mn tons. Flat steel output also grew by 18.2% that year, totaling 2.9 million tons.
One of the country’s largest metallurgical enterprises, Qarmet, continues to play a significant role in Kazakhstan’s steel sector. The company exceeded its 2024 production targets by 15% for pig iron and steel, 18% for coke, 12% for sinter, and 17% for bar rolling operations.
In the first quarter of 2025, Qarmet boosted steel production by 30% and product shipments by 23% compared to the same period in 2024. The company plans to produce 3.7mn tons of steel by the end of the year.
Qarmet is also expanding its industrial footprint. In partnership with China's Xinxing Ductile Iron Pipes Co, in 2024 it planned to build a cast iron pipe plant with a design capacity of 200,000 tons per year. The project carries an estimated investment of $161mn.
Additionally, Qarmet signed a $1bn agreement with China Metallurgical Group to develop long-term cooperation in Kazakhstan’s iron and steel sector, signaling sustained foreign interest and growth potential in the country’s metallurgical industry.
