Tashkent has been named one of the top three cities in Central Asia in the Global Cities Index 2025 released by Oxford Economics. The ranking evaluates the 1,000 largest cities in the world across five key areas: economy, human capital, quality of life, environment, and governance.

In the regional comparison, Almaty in Kazakhstan secured the top position, followed by the country’s capital Astana in second place. Tashkent took third place, making it the highest-ranked city in Uzbekistan. On the global scale, Tashkent ranks 471st out of 1,000 cities.
The Uzbek capital performed best in the human capital category, where it ranked 123rd worldwide. This reflects Tashkent’s strength in education, workforce quality, and demographic indicators. The high score is visually represented in green on the Oxford Economics map, indicating above-average performance.
However, Tashkent’s performance was less favorable in other areas. It ranked 558th in economy, which includes factors such as GDP, job growth, and economic diversity. In terms of quality of life—measuring housing, healthcare, and safety—the city placed 565th.

The governance category, which assesses local government efficiency and transparency, saw Tashkent ranked 840th. Environmental indicators such as sustainability and waste management earned the city a low ranking of 872nd, marked in dark red on the index map, highlighting it as one of the weakest areas.
Globally, the top ten cities in the 2025 ranking are led by New York, which excels in finance, technology, and media. London comes second, recognized for its high human capital and world-class universities.
Paris ranks third due to its strong service-oriented economy and cultural influence. Other cities in the top ten include San Jose, Seattle, Melbourne, Sydney, Boston, Tokyo, and San Francisco—many of which are hubs for innovation, education, and economic growth.
