Kazakhstan is taking strides towards sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) production, marking a milestone in its commitment to reducing carbon emissions.
Askhat Khassenov, Chairman of the Board of KazMunayGas (KMG), Kazakhstan’s national oil and gas company, held a strategic meeting on June 20, with executives from the American company LanzaJet and the Japanese investment company Mitsui. The discussion focused on the potential production of SAF in Kazakhstan.
SAF, an eco-friendly alternative to traditional Jet-1 fuel, offers an impressive 80% reduction in carbon emissions, making it a critical component in the aviation industry's push towards sustainability.
KazMunayGas, alongside Air Astana and with financial backing from the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD), has already completed a preliminary feasibility study for the construction of an SAF production facility. The project is now moving into the next phase: developing a comprehensive feasibility study to outline the practical steps for implementation.
Air Astana, Kazakhstan’s leading airline, is actively investigating the integration of SAF into its operations. In alignment with global low-carbon development goals, the airline aims to gradually increase its SAF usage, targeting 5% by 2040, 15% by 2050, and 25% by 2060. This incremental approach underscores Air Astana’s long-term commitment to sustainable aviation.
KazMunayGas, which owns three major oil refineries capable of producing Jet A-1 aviation fuel, is poised to play a pivotal role in this green transition. These refineries could potentially blend Jet A-1 with SAF, facilitating a smoother shift towards greener aviation fuel.
LanzaJet, renowned for its innovative approach to SAF, recently inaugurated the world’s first SAF production facility, LanzaJet Freedom Pines Fuels, in the United States. The facility aims to produce 1bn gallons of SAF by 2030, setting a global benchmark for sustainable fuel production. LanzaJet’s expertise and experience will be invaluable as Kazakhstan navigates its own SAF production journey.
