Uzbekistan's gas imports surged in the first four months of 2024, reaching $462.8 mn, as it was reported on the data on foreign trade from the Presidential Statistics Agency. This marks a significant increase compared to the same period last year, where imports totaled $153.1 mn, representing a threefold rise. The latest figures also account for 66% of the total gas imports recorded in 2023, which amounted to $694.9 mn.
The breakdown of gas imports by month reveals a substantial upward trend. In January, imports stood at $35.6 mn, followed by a notable increase in February to $131.1 mn. March saw a further surge to $193.5 mn, with April recording $102.6 mn in imports. However, the specific physical volumes of these supplies remain undisclosed by the agency.
Conversely, Uzbekistan's gas exports have declined since the beginning of the year. The country exported gas worth $52.3 mn, marking a nearly 2.3 times decrease compared to the same period in the previous year, where exports totaled $117.9 mn. January recorded exports of $21 mn, followed by a decrease to $5.7 mn in February. March saw a slight increase to $18.7 mn, with April recording exports worth $6.9 mn.
The imbalance between imports and exports has widened, with imports exceeding exports by $410.5 mn. This reinforces Uzbekistan's status as a net importer of gas.
Since October 2023, Uzbekistan has been importing gas from Russia through Kazakhstan's territory. Plans have been announced to invest $500 mn in modernizing the main gas system to further increase gas imports from the north.
