Kazakhstan potato exports spike by 70% in 2023
Potato exports of Kazakhstan surged by an impressive 70% in 2023, reaching a record level of 411,000 tons, East Fruit reported on February 27.
Factors contributing to the growth of potato exports:
- Favorable climatic conditions
- Investments in agricultural technologies
- Infrastructure improvement
- Rising demand
To ensure efficient collection, storage, sorting, packaging and distribution of fruits and vegetables, the Ministry of Trade and the Ministry of Agriculture are working to develop the appropriate infrastructure.
“We have been given the task of increasing the volume of non-resource exports to $41 bn by 2025. At the same time, the target indicator for 2023 was reached at $35.1 bn, with an overfulfillment of 2%,” noted Aizhan Bizhanova.
Kazakhstan, a significant player in the global potato market, exports this versatile vegetable to various countries, primarily within the CIS region. Key export destinations include Russia, Uzbekistan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, and other CIS nations. Additionally, Kazakh potatoes find markets in Europe and Asia.
Moreover, Kazakhstan's commitment to fostering regional trade ties was exemplified by recent reports indicating plans for potato imports from Uzbekistan to the city of Aktau in Kazakhstan. This initiative forms part of broader efforts to bolster agricultural trade cooperation between the two nations and tap into each other's strengths in agricultural production.
Looking ahead, Uzbekistan aims to significantly ramp up its agricultural export volume to $3.5 bn by 2024. To achieve this ambitious target, the country is poised to boost the production of fruits, vegetables, milk, and other agricultural commodities, leveraging its agricultural potential and exploring new avenues for trade expansion.
