M Cosmetic announced its partnership with the United Nations Development Programme’s (UNDP) project, “Call Umida”. The project is dedicated to safeguarding women from harassment. The announcement was made by Denis Kosachenko, the CEO of Magnit Central Asia, on his LinkedIn page.
The company has plans to initiate staff training shortly. The training will equip the staff with the necessary skills to support the project’s objectives.
“Call Umida” is a unique initiative where women who have been harassed can seek assistance from participating establishments such as shops, cafes, and restaurants. The staff at these establishments are trained to provide temporary protection to the woman or to contact law enforcement if necessary.
Uzbekistan is reportedly working on a system to protect women and children at the mahalla level. This initiative was discussed during a meeting on social protection issues led by Uzbek President Shavkat Mirziyoyev.
In addition to the protection system, a comprehensive support system will be implemented for women who have been victims of violence. This system will provide support at their place of residence.
During the meeting, President Mirziyoyev highlighted the lack of efforts to prevent marriages between close relatives. He emphasized the need to educate the population about the potential consequences of such marriages. In 2022, the Committee for Family and Women’s Affairs proposed a ban on marriages between collateral relatives.
As of August 2023, over 21.7 mn women received protection orders according to the Committee on Family and Women’s Affairs. A significant 84.7% of all reported violence against Uzbek women occurred within the family.
The “Call Umida” initiative, which was launched by UNDP in a pilot mode in 2022, has received support from various companies. These include retailer Korzinka.uz, the Asklepiy Group pharmacy chain, YaponaMama restaurants, Testo by Zamira & Co, and others.
