A significant meeting and negotiations between official delegations from Tajikistan and the Tatarstan unfolded on February 22, in Kazan, the capital of Tatarstan. The discussions, highlighted by the Tajik president's official website, underscored the warmth of the reception extended by Rustam Minnikhanov, the Head of Tatarstan, and commended the successful hosting of the international mixed tournament, the Games of the Future.
President Emomali Rahmon of Tajikistan lauded the Russian Federation as a strategic partner and ally, emphasizing the pivotal role of regional cooperation in bolstering ties between the two nations. Over eighty federal subjects of Russia now maintain direct relations with Tajikistan.
A focal point of the negotiations was Tajikistan's keen interest in enhancing economic, trade, and investment collaboration with Tatarstan. Both parties identified key sectors such as industry, energy, construction, agriculture, and pharmaceutics as potential drivers of bilateral trade. Of particular significance was the proposal to establish joint wholesale trade and logistics centers in both Tajikistan and Tatarstan, aimed at facilitating smoother commercial exchanges.
Furthermore, the talks delved into expanding cooperation in education, healthcare, labor migration, and tourism.. There was a mutual recognition of the importance of training qualified personnel to meet the evolving demands of the labor market, with a proposal to ramp up collaborative efforts in this regard.
Rustam Minnikhanov, Head of Tatarstan, visited Tajikistan in early March of 2023, as part of a Russian delegation led by Prime Minister Mikhail Mishustin. During his visit to Dushanbe, Minnikhanov held discussions with President Emomali Rahmon and Prime Minister Qohir Rasoulzoda.
In 2023, Russia became Tajikistan's foremost trading ally, representing a significant 20.6% share of trade. The bilateral trade volume surpassed $1.7 bn, indicating a deepening of economic relations. Within Russian exports to Tajikistan, mineral products constituted 40.1% of the total. Apart from petroleum items, primary exports included food, chemicals, timber and related products, ferrous metals, machinery, and various other commodities.
Earlier Daryo reported that upon arriving in Kazan on February 21, Uzbekistan's President Shavkat Mirziyoyev and Russian President Vladimir Putin met to deliberate on collaborating to develop transportation routes.
