In a recent meeting, Mohammad Baqer Qalibaf, the Speaker of the Iranian Parliament, and Rustam Emomali, the Chairman of the Tajik Parliament, discussed the growing threat of ISIS in Afghanistan, as per the Aamaj News. Qalibaf expressed concern that ISIS is seeking to destabilize the security of Afghanistan’s neighbouring countries.
Recent explosions in Kerman
Qalibaf attributed the recent explosions in Kerman province, Iran, which resulted in the death of 103 individuals and left 284 injured, to the activities of ISIS in Afghanistan. The twin explosions occurred during a commemorative ceremony marking the assassination of Qasem Soleimani.
Emphasis on cooperation
The two officials underscored the importance of cooperation in combating terrorism. Qalibaf stated, “In the current situation, we need large-scale cooperation to fight terrorism, arms and drug trafficking in Afghanistan.” This statement highlights the shared concerns of Iran and Tajikistan regarding the security situation in Afghanistan.
Call for inclusive government in Afghanistan
Qalibaf reiterated the Iranian government’s stance on the need for an inclusive government in Afghanistan. This emphasis aligns with the international community’s call for a representative government in the country.
Background
Earlier, Daryo reported that Al Mersaad, a Taliban-affiliated publication, has ignited a debate by implying that the suicide bombers involved in the recent Kerman, Iran attack could potentially be Tajik nationals. The publication further alleges that Tajik intelligence has ties to ISIS, branding Tajikistan as an emerging centre for the recruitment of ISIS militants and a significant risk to both regional and global security.
The assault, which occurred near the burial site of Suleimani on January 3, led to a substantial number of casualties and injuries. Iran’s Supreme Leader Khamenei blamed the attack on Israel, promising retribution. As the investigation into the Kerman terrorist attack progresses, the intricate network of accusations involving Tajikistan, ISIS, and the Iranian incident intensifies the geopolitical strain in an already unstable region.
