The IV Elllobregat Open Chess tournament concluded with resounding success for Uzbekistan's chess players, who clinched several top positions in the prestigious competition held in Barcelona, Spain, National Information Agency of Uzbekistan reported. The tournament featured over 200 young chess enthusiasts competing in the "A" and "B" groups, with a substantial prize pool of €57,250.
In the intense competition of the "B" group, Javokhir Bozorov secured 2nd place, closely followed by Islombek Sindarov in 3rd place and Marjona Malikova in 5th place among the 77 participants. Although Robin Coles from France claimed the top spot in this group, Bozorov, Sindarov, and Barchinoy Shokirjonova managed to match the leader with 7 points each.
A crucial turning point in the tournament occurred during the 8th round matches between Marjona Malikova - Abdumajid Botiraliev and Javokhir Bozorov - Islombek Sindarov. If not for the tied outcomes, Saltanat Muratova from Kazakhstan, with 5 points before the round, could have altered the competition landscape with at least a draw against Robin Coles, potentially leading to a complete Uzbek sweep of prizes in the "B" group.
Following this pivotal round, members of the Uzbek national team, including Marjona Malikova, Madinabonu Khalilova, Maftuna Bobomurodova, and Abdumajid Botiraliev, scored 6 points each, securing places in the 7-11 range.
In the "A" group, Saidakbar Saidaliev, representing Uzbekistan, claimed the 19th position with 6 points, while Muhammadzahid Suyarov secured the 32nd spot with the same point total. Other notable performances from Uzbek participants in this group include Muhiddin Madaminov (44th place), Humoyun Berdimurodov (46th place), and Olmos Rahmatullaev (48th place), all finishing with 5.5 points in the international tournament.
The "A" group was ultimately won by Indian player Narayanan, who accumulated an impressive 7.5 points, solidifying his victory in the fiercely contested competition.
