Tajikistan has affirmed its support for the SPECA Program, aimed at the prudent and effective utilization of water and energy resources in the Central Asian region. President Emomali Rahmon made this declaration during the SPECA summit in Baku, Azerbaijan, emphasizing Tajikistan's readiness for collaborative and mutually beneficial efforts with all stakeholders in the efficient management of water and energy resources in Central Asia.
“We intend to double our capacity for the production of environmentally friendly green energy in the future as a key basis for promoting the "green” economy. Further effective development of Tajikistan’s hydropower resources, including with the participation of countries participating in the Program, can make a significant contribution to the development of our common market for renewable energy sources,” the president emphasized, noting that climate change remains a serious challenge for the SPECA Program region.
The president acknowledged climate change as a substantial challenge for the SPECA Program region, emphasizing the degradation of water resources as a key indicator of this phenomenon. Rahmon stressed the critical role of water resources in the comprehensive socio-economic development of the region's countries, advocating for the prioritization of conservation and rational use of water and other natural resources within the SPECA Program's agenda. He called for the establishment of suitable mechanisms for collaboration in these areas under the SPECA Program framework.
Tajikistan, with its abundant water resources, stands as a notable candidate for green energy development. The country is actively expanding its hydropower capacity, constructing new hydroelectric power plants, and modernizing existing facilities. Furthermore, Tajikistan is making strides in the development of renewable energy sources like solar and wind power, a move that not only contributes to the diversification of the energy system but also reduces dependence on energy imports.
