Uzbekistan citrus prices plummet: oranges down 30%, mandarins and lemons follow suit

Uzbekistan citrus prices plummet: oranges down 30%, mandarins and lemons follow suit

Uzbekistan's citrus market has experienced a significant drop in the prices of oranges, mandarin, and lemons, as reported by EastFruit experts. This decline marks the largest weekly change in citrus prices in the country for the current year.

    Orange Prices Plummet

According to EastFruit's price monitoring, from November 10 to November 17, 2023, the average wholesale price for oranges in Uzbekistan plummeted by 30%, dropping from UZS 23,000 to UZS 16,000/kg (from $1.87 to $1.30). This current pricing is 20% lower than it was at the same time last year and 2021, indicating a significant decrease in market value.

Mandarin Prices on a Downward Trend

The market for tangerines has also witnessed a noticeable decrease. From November 10 to 17, 2023, the average wholesale price for mandarins fell from UZS 20,000 to UZS 17,000/kg (from $1.63 to $1.39), a 15% drop in just one week. This trend has been ongoing, with mandarin prices decreasing for four consecutive weeks. Since October 20, the average price has dropped from UZS 29,000 to UZS 17,000/kg (from $2.37 to $1.39), a stark 41% decrease over the past month. Interestingly, the current prices are similar to those recorded last year on the same date but are still 31% higher than in 2021 where the average wholesale price was UZS 13 000/kg ($1.21).

    Lemon Prices Halve

The lemon market is not exempt from this trend. Over the past two weeks, the prices for locally produced lemons have halved in retail markets, particularly in the capital. This drastic price drop is attributed to the increasing supply of local lemons as greenhouse farms in the country hit peak harvest season. As of November 17, 2023, the average retail price of Uzbek lemons is around UZS 25,000/kg ($2.04).

In March of this year, Daryo reported that Uzbekistan's mandarin prices were among the cheapest among the countries monitored by EastFruit and the same can be said for its orange prices at the moment.

    CountryOrange prices (USD/kg)
    Uzbekistan$1.3
    Poland$1.36
    Russia$1.46
    Tajikistan$1.46
    Ukraine$1.38
