OpenAI has announced significant changes in its leadership. Sam Altman, the CEO and co-founder of OpenAI, will step down from his role and his position on the board of directors, as stated on the company’s website.
The interim CEO will be Mira Murati, the current technical director of the company. The selection process for a new CEO will be announced in due course.
The board of directors cited a lack of transparency in Altman’s communication as a limiting factor in his ability to fulfil his duties. The board expressed a lack of confidence in Altman’s ability to continue leading OpenAI.
Greg Brockman, another co-founder of OpenAI, has stepped down as president of the board of directors but will remain with the organization. Brockman reportedly learned of Altman’s removal from the board from fellow member and leading researcher, Ilya Sutskever.
Altman’s dismissal came as a surprise to many OpenAI employees, according to The Verge. Altman, who was often seen as the public face of OpenAI, represented the company at major events, including the company’s inaugural DevDay conference.
Altman, who co-founded OpenAI with Elon Musk in 2015, was reported to be in talks with former Apple Design Director Jonathan Ive about creating an “AI iPhone”. Altman also owns a 14.9% stake in Humane, the startup behind the AI Pin device.
OpenAI made its ChatGPT neural network available for public use at the end of 2022. By February, the application had reached a monthly audience of 100 mn users, making it the fastest-growing application in history.
