In a poignant address at the 16th Summit of the Economic Cooperation Organization (ECO), Shavkat Mirziyoyev, the President of Uzbekistan, expressed deep concern over the escalating Israeli-Palestinian conflict and emphasized the need for collective action to avert a larger regional crisis.
President Mirziyoyev began by acknowledging the dire consequences of the Israeli-Palestinian war on global peace and security. He highlighted the unfortunate reality that civilians, especially women, children, and the elderly, bear the brunt of these violent conflicts. The President stressed the increasing risk of the conflict spreading across the entire Middle East region, emphasizing the urgency of preventing its escalation into a large-scale war.
With a call for an immediate ceasefire, President Mirziyoyev urged both sides to engage in peace negotiations and find a reasonable compromise. Reaffirming Uzbekistan's unwavering stance, he emphasized the Palestinian people's right to their own state, as affirmed by United Nations resolutions.
“The conflict [Israel-Gaza] must not be allowed to escalate into a large-scale war. We urge both sides to cease fire, start peace negotiations, and come to a reasonable compromise. We once again reiterate our firm position on the Palestinian people’s right to have their own state, as confirmed by the UN resolutions,” President Mirziyoyev voiced.
However, the President did not limit his concerns to the Middle East alone. He drew attention to the absence of Afghanistan in the summit, emphasizing the importance of not abandoning the multiethnic people of Afghanistan in the face of complex challenges. President Mirziyoyev urged active engagement with Afghanistan in the regional integration process, considering it a necessary condition for sustainable development.
The president of Uzbekistan called on all member nations to increase humanitarian assistance to the Afghan people. He stressed the need to address the profound social and economic problems faced by Afghanistan through collective responsibility and effective mechanisms. President Mirziyoyev highlighted the historical ties with Afghanistan, emphasizing the importance of standing in solidarity with their close neighbors in these challenging times.
As the 16th ECO Summit progresses, President Mirziyoyev's call for global cooperation and humanitarian efforts echoes through the halls of the summit venue, urging leaders to unite in the pursuit of peace and stability.
