Euronews journalist Galina Polonskaya recently immersed herself in the determination and skill of the Uzbekistan national youth hockey team during a training session, highlighting the promising revival of hockey in the country.
Jasurbek Rustamkhonov, the team captain, garnered recognition as the top scorer in the Asian and Oceanian Championship among junior teams last year. His impressive 14 goals propelled Uzbekistan to the forefront of the continental championship.
The resurgence of hockey in Uzbekistan serves as a catalyst for young athletes to embrace this globally popular sport. Bakhtiyor Fazylov, President of the Hockey Federation of Uzbekistan, expressed the federation's ambitious goal:
“We want to revive it and push it further. The goal of our federation is to reach the World Hockey Championship in 2025.”
Within just five years, the Hockey Federation has not only established a professional hockey club, Humo, and a successful youth team but has also positioned Uzbek hockey as a favorite among a new generation of fans. The Humo Arena, the country's main ice complex, hosts games that attract a record number of spectators, turning hockey into one of the most prestigious and discussed sports in Uzbekistan.
Euronews underscores that the revival of ice hockey in Uzbekistan is not only creating a buzz around the sport but also inspiring a new generation of stars, solidifying hockey's status as one of the most popular sports in the country.
