The President of Kazakhstan, Kassym-Jomart Tokayev, held a crucial meeting with the Chairman of the Anti-Corruption Agency, Askhat Zhumagali, to review the performance and achievements of the agency during the first ten months of the current year. The meeting aimed to assess the state's efforts in combating corruption, ensuring accountability, and promoting transparency in various sectors of the nation.
One of the key highlights from the report was the registration of approximately 1,500 corruption crimes across the country during the ten-month period. Furthermore, more than 1,100 individuals were exposed for their involvement in these crimes, with 158 of them holding managerial positions at various levels within government and organizations.
In a significant stride towards justice, over 1,000 of these corruption cases were forwarded to court, and an impressive KZT 282bn ($608mn) was successfully recovered to compensate for the damages caused by these crimes.
Chairman Zhumagali also disclosed that since 2022, the agency had managed to secure the return of approximately KZT 857bn ($1.8bn) worth of property assets and funds to the budget and entities of the quasi-public sector, emphasizing the government's commitment to rectifying the misuse of public resources.
In addition to the prosecution of corrupt individuals, Chairman Zhumagali highlighted the progress made in preventing corruption. He mentioned the Corruption Risk Map, a crucial tool in identifying and mitigating corruption risks in various government projects. Under this initiative, monitoring was carried out on 156 social facilities across the country, with a total budget of KZT 2.44 trillion ($5.2bn), where delivery deadlines had been violated and there were risks of theft. This proactive approach ensures that public resources are used efficiently and ethically.
Furthermore, in an effort to involve civil society in the fight against corruption, the "Anti-Corruption Volunteering" project was launched. More than 2,000 concerned Kazakhstani citizens are actively participating in this initiative, illustrating the nation's collective resolve to combat corruption at all levels.
Following the productive meeting, President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev provided specific instructions to continue the systematic work against corruption while strengthening preventive measures. These directives emphasize the government's unwavering commitment to eradicating corruption, upholding the rule of law, and fostering a transparent and accountable society.
