Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has expressed concern that the Israel-Gaza conflict is diverting global attention from the ongoing war in Ukraine. He believes this shift in focus is a strategic move by Russia, which initiated a full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022.
No stalemate in Ukraine, says Zelensky
Contrary to the country’s top military general’s recent assessment of a stalemate in the Ukrainian conflict, Zelensky insists that the fight is far from over. Despite the slow progress of Ukraine’s counter-offensive in the south, he denies any signs of war fatigue among Kyiv’s Western allies.
Tragic loss for Ukraine’s 128th Mountain Assault Brigade
In a tragic incident, Ukrainian soldiers from the 128th Mountain Assault Brigade “Zakarpattia (Transcarpathia)” were killed. The exact number of casualties from the alleged Russian missile strike in the southern Zaporizhzhia region remains undisclosed.
Ukraine’s military reported a successful hit on the “sea and port infrastructure” of a shipbuilding plant in Crimea, a southern peninsula illegally annexed by Russia in 2014. Russia’s defence ministry claims to have shot down most of the missiles but admits to damage to a Russian ship.
Zelensky’s Meeting with European Commission President
During a briefing with European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, Zelensky reiterated his concerns about the shifting global focus due to the Middle East conflict. He emphasized that Ukraine has the power to maintain its fight, despite Russia’s attempts to weaken international attention on Ukraine.
When asked about Ukraine’s chief military commander Valery Zaluzhny’s assessment of the war moving to a “positional” or static stage, Zelensky disagreed. He acknowledged Russia’s air superiority but stressed the need for advanced anti-aircraft defences and US-made F-16 warplanes.
No pressure for negotiations with Russia
Zelensky dismissed media reports suggesting that he is under pressure to negotiate with Russia. He assured that no EU or US leaders are pushing for negotiations that would involve conceding anything to Russia.
