The U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID), in collaboration with Uzbekistan's Ministry of Health and Abt Associates, is launching a five-year initiative called "Tuberculosis-Free Uzbekistan," aimed at making vital tuberculosis services more accessible throughout the country.
To address the persistent issue of drug-resistant tuberculosis in Uzbekistan, this project will receive an $18mn investment.
According to Gazeta.uz, Uzbekistan continues to grapple with a high burden of multidrug-resistant tuberculosis, which poses a significant threat to the nation's public healthcare system, the well-being of its people, and its overall economic development.
In 2022, 8% of newly reported tuberculosis cases in Uzbekistan showed resistance to two of the most commonly used and effective tuberculosis medications, as per the Uzbekistan Ministry of Health's data.
USAID is at the forefront of global efforts by the U.S. government to combat tuberculosis, guided by a global strategy for 2023-2030. As the world's leading bilateral donor, USAID utilizes innovative approaches and research to accelerate progress in eradicating tuberculosis.
Over the past 30 years, the U.S. government has provided Uzbekistan with over $155mn in assistance for healthcare, with nearly $60 mn of that funding dedicated to combating tuberculosis.
