Russia and China used their veto power to block a U.S. proposal at the United Nations Security Council aimed at addressing the Israel-Hamas conflict, Reuters reports.
The U.S. draft resolution called for humanitarian pauses in the fighting to allow aid access, the protection of civilians, and a halt to arming Hamas and other militant groups in Gaza. This move followed a previous U.S. veto of a humanitarian-focused draft from Brazil. The final U.S. text, which included a right to self-defense for Israel and a demand for Iran to stop exporting arms to militant groups, was considerably toned down compared to the initial version.
While ten council members voted in favor of the U.S. text, the United Arab Emirates voted against it, and Brazil and Mozambique abstained. China's U.N. Ambassador emphasized the urgent need for a ceasefire, given the high civilian toll. The United Nations General Assembly will vote on an Arab states' draft resolution for a ceasefire since no country has veto power in the General Assembly. Israel continues its actions against Hamas, leading to a growing humanitarian crisis in Gaza.
