The Minister of Water Management of the Republic of Uzbekistan, Shavkat Khamrauev, recently held a meeting with the Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary Ambassador of Hungary to Uzbekistan, Jozef Roja, at the Ministry of Water Management. The meeting underscored the strong and growing partnership between Uzbekistan and Hungary, particularly in the field of water resources management.
Hungary holds a significant position as one of Uzbekistan's key partners in Central Europe. With a population of approximately 10mn, Hungary is known for its agro-industrial sector and rapid economic development. The historical ties and cooperation between the Uzbek and Hungarian peoples have laid a solid foundation for collaboration between the two nations.
Uzbekistan and Hungary have maintained continuous political dialogues at the highest levels, reflecting the strong political will of their leaders. The geographical positions of the two countries, with Hungary in Central Europe and Uzbekistan in Central Asia, offer unique opportunities for collaboration. Hungary serves as a bridge to European markets for Uzbekistan, while Uzbekistan provides access to the Central Asian market for Hungary.
Water management holds a special place in the Uzbekistan-Hungary cooperation framework. Recognizing its significance, a joint expert group on cooperation in the field of water resources management was established between the two countries. In April of this year, a Hungarian delegation, led by Peter Kovacs, the Director of the Department of Water Resources of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Hungary, visited Uzbekistan. The visit resulted in the approval of comprehensive measures for Uzbekistan-Hungary cooperation from 2023 to 2025.
Cooperation has also been extended to educational and scientific institutions responsible for training personnel in water management in Hungary. A memorandum on mutual cooperation was signed between the Research Institute of Irrigation and Water Problems of the Ministry of Water Management of Uzbekistan and the Hungarian University of Agriculture and Natural Sciences (MATE).
During the meeting, Minister Shavkat Khamrauev congratulated Ambassador Jozef Roja on his appointment and wished him success in his diplomatic mission in Uzbekistan. Ambassador Roja expressed gratitude for the warm reception and highlighted that this meeting marked his first interaction with members of the Uzbek government following his appointment as Ambassador.
The discussions during the meeting covered various aspects of water management in Uzbekistan, including the ongoing reforms initiated by the country's leadership. These reforms encompass digitization efforts within the sector and the introduction of water-saving technologies.
The meeting concluded with a focus on strengthening mutual cooperation between Uzbekistan and Hungary, emphasizing future plans and collaboration in the field of water resources management. These exchanges and initiatives highlight the commitment of both nations to enhancing their cooperation, particularly in areas crucial to the development and sustainability of Uzbekistan's water resources management.
