President Sadyr Japarov of Kyrgyzstan participated in the inaugural Summit of Heads of State "Central Asia and the USA" in New York, where he voiced his support for an increased American business presence in his country. The summit, opened by U.S. President Joe Biden, provided a platform for leaders from Central Asia to discuss a broad range of issues.
Sadyr Japarov highlighted the growing agenda and the expanding scope of discussions between the participating nations. He emphasized that cooperation with the United States, particularly within the C5+1 format, holds a prominent position in Kyrgyzstan's foreign policy. Japarov underscored the need for this format to foster mutual understanding, trust, security, and stability, while also creating favorable conditions for expanded trade and economic cooperation.
"The global economy had not yet fully recovered from the negative impact of the coronavirus pandemic when it faced new shocks and instability. In my opinion, in such crisis conditions, issues of ensuring, first of all, food and energy security, macroeconomic stability and social stability in the region require priority attention and coordinated activity from the Central Asian states," President Japarov stressed.
The Kyrgyz President emphasized that the region possesses abundant natural resources, substantial reserves of energy resources and minerals, as well as a skilled workforce. He expressed a strong commitment to attracting foreign partners, including American businesses, to the country and the region. He highlighted key areas for international cooperation, such as the green economy, hydropower, IT technologies, employment, and education. Kyrgyzstan is actively implementing infrastructure projects in various sectors, including industry, agriculture, irrigation, and transportation.
Japarov also mentioned ongoing efforts to modernize the country's crucial transport arteries, with a major regional rail project in the pipeline. These initiatives are of paramount importance for a landlocked country like Kyrgyzstan.
Furthermore, the President stated Kyrgyzstan's intent to further enhance its bilateral trade and economic relations with the United States, recognizing the untapped potential of this partnership. He expressed a desire to collaborate on regional issues and underscored the vital role of the energy sector in ensuring economic sustainability.
Kyrgyzstan's abundant water resources and significant hydropower potential were highlighted, with President Japarov noting that only a fraction of this potential is currently utilized. The country is also well-positioned to harness various forms of renewable energy. In a bold move, Kyrgyzstan has initiated the restructuring of its external debt, exploring exchanges for green economy projects and seeking American assistance in working with international financial institutions.
“Our country has almost half of the region’s water resources. Kyrgyzstan’s hydropower potential is about 142.5 bn kilowatt-hours per year, but no more than 13% is used. Kyrgyzstan also has great potential for various types of renewable energy sources,” the president stated.
President Japarov extended an invitation to investors, international partners, and financial institutions to invest in projects related to hydroelectric power stations and other renewable energy facilities.
Turning his attention to regional security, President Japarov highlighted the inextricable link between Central Asian security and the situation in Afghanistan. He expressed Kyrgyzstan's interest in peace and stability in Afghanistan and its commitment to maintaining positive neighborly relations with the country.
President Sadyr Japarov emphasized the significance of the summit in providing a substantial boost to mutually beneficial cooperation between Central Asian states and the United States. The meeting served as a platform to explore opportunities for economic growth, regional stability, and energy sustainability in the region.
