Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva has stated that Russian President Vladimir Putin will not face arrest in Brazil if he attends the Group of 20 (G20) meeting scheduled for Rio de Janeiro next year. President Lula made these remarks during an interview with news show Firstpost at the G20 meeting in Delhi, Reuters reported.
Lula mentioned that Putin would be invited to the G20 meeting in Rio de Janeiro, and he himself planned to attend a meeting of the BRICS bloc of developing nations in Russia before the Rio event. He expressed confidence that Putin could attend the G20 meeting in Brazil without any concerns about arrest, saying,
"What I can say to you is that if I'm president of Brazil, and he comes to Brazil, there's no way he will be arrested."
The International Criminal Court (ICC) issued an arrest warrant against Putin in March, accusing him of war crimes related to the alleged illegal deportation of hundreds of children from Ukraine. Russia has denied these accusations and has not acknowledged involvement in war crimes or the forced deportation of Ukrainian children.
Notably, Putin has often avoided international gatherings in the past. During the G20 meeting in Delhi, he was absent and instead sent Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov as the country's representative.
Brazil is a signatory to the Rome Statute, which led to the establishment of the ICC. However, Lula's office did not immediately respond to requests for further comments on this matter.
At the G20 meeting in Delhi, the participating nations adopted a consensus declaration that refrained from condemning Russia for its actions in Ukraine but did call on all states to refrain from using force to seize territory.
These statements by President Lula indicate Brazil's willingness to welcome Putin to the G20 meeting and suggest a potential diplomatic approach to the ICC's arrest warrant, although the legal aspects and implications of such a situation remain to be seen.
