The Mercedes-Benz vehicle that was once owned by former Afghan king Mohammad Zahir Shah has secured the top prize at an American auto show, Ariana News reports.
The Mercedes-Benz 540 K Special Roadster, which originally belonged to Zahir Shah, was awarded the Best of Show title at the prestigious Concours d'Elegance event in the United States.
The car, a 540 K Special Roadster model from Mercedes-Benz, was commissioned in May 1937 by Afghanistan's then-king, Mohammad Zahir Shah. It was delivered to him in September of the same year. Zahir Shah later gifted the car to his son-in-law in Britain in 1950.
Subsequently, the Mercedes-Benz 540 K Special Roadster changed hands and ended up in the possession of an American collector. The current owner of the vehicle is Jim Patterson, an American collector, who acquired the car for a price of $9.9mn during an auction at the 2022 Pebble Beach event.
The Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance, held annually in California, is renowned as one of the world's foremost automobile exhibitions, showcasing exceptional vehicles of historical significance and exquisite design.
Mohammad Zahir Shah held the throne of Afghanistan for a period of 40 years, reigning from 1933 to 1973.
