The military junta that seized power in Niger has denounced military agreements with France and announced the revocation of Niger's envoys in France, the US, Nigeria, and Togo, Euronews has reported.
Amidst this, the deposed president of Niger, Mohamed Bazoum, made his first public statement, expressing concerns that the entire central Sahel region could fall under Russian influence through the Wagner Group.
On Friday morning, West African mediators left Niger without meeting with the junta leader, Abdurahman Tchiani.
John Kirby, the White House National Security Council's coordinator for strategic communications, stated:
"We continue to call for the safe release of President Bazoum and his family... We have also consistently supported the efforts of ECOWAS, the African Union, and other governments in the region to resolve this crisis."
The coup leaders have vowed an immediate response to any military intervention by the ECOWAS community, which is demanding the restoration of constitutional order in Niger.
Thousands of junta supporters took to the streets of Niamey on August 4, with anti-French slogans.
Previously Daryo reported that in the aftermath of the military junta's coup in Niger that ousted President Mohamed Bazoum, tensions between the country and its former colonial power, France have escalated.
France has taken swift action by starting the evacuation of its citizens and other Europeans from Niger, which marks a departure from its reaction to previous coups in neighbouring countries Mali and Burkina Faso. The evacuation process involves three planned flights, with the first landing in Paris in the evening of August 1, carrying 262 people, including French and other European nationals.
