    President of Uzbekistan calls for visa-free regime for Gulf countries

    The second summit in the Central Asia - GCC will take place in Samarkand, following the approval of this decision by the participants during the first summit held in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia on July 19.

    The event saw the attendance of high-level representatives from various countries, including the Crown Prince, the Chairman of the Cabinet of Ministers of Saudi Arabia, and the Presidents of Uzbekistan, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, and Turkmenistan. Additionally, dignitaries from Qatar, the United Arab Emirates, Kuwait, Oman, and Bahrain also participated, presidental press service of Uzbekistan reported on July 19.

    During the summit, crucial matters were discussed, including the advancement of political dialogue, expansion of trade, economic, and investment cooperation, strengthening cultural and humanitarian ties, as well as addressing regional and international politics.

    In his speech at the summit in the Central Asia - GCC President Shavkat Mirziyoyev of Uzbekistan emphasised the historical ties between the peoples of Central Asia and the Gulf region, underlining the significance of close trade relations, shared values, traditions, and religion. Despite the existing global risks and challenges, President Mirziyoyev highlighted that both regions remain spaces of peace, stability, and progress.

    Over the years, relations between Uzbekistan and the Gulf countries have witnessed a remarkable improvement, reaching a new level of cooperation. President Mirziyoyev presented a vision for enhancing collaboration in various priority areas.

    In the political realm, the President emphasised the importance of extensive cooperation in different formats. He proposed exploring the development of a multilateral agreement on friendship, regional interconnectedness, and cooperation, aiming to strengthen ties and foster mutual understanding between the two regions.

    Regarding high technologies and investments, the President advocated for the establishment of platforms and mechanisms to promote cooperation in innovation, artificial intelligence, green economy, digitalization, smart agriculture, and nano- and biotechnologies. His proposal to create a Joint Council of Investors with business representatives further underlines the commitment to fostering economic ties. Additionally, the call for a separate road map for joint green energy projects highlights the shared commitment to sustainable development.

    In the sphere of trade and transport interconnectedness, President Mirziyoyev stressed the importance of establishing a free trade zone with the Gulf countries, harmonising technical regulations, and advancing electronic commerce. By suggesting the exploration of a multilateral trade agreement, he aimed to facilitate smoother and more efficient trade relations.

    The President encouraged the use of favourable tariffs along the Middle Transport Corridor, the utilisation of existing multimodal routes, and the promotion of direct flights through subsidy measures. His call for active participation in the Trans-Afghan railway project demonstrates the shared interest in enhancing regional connectivity and facilitating trade and transport links.

    In addressing ecology and climate change, President Mirziyoyev emphasised the significance of establishing an international Joint Research Program at the University for the Study of Environment and Climate Change of Central Asia in Uzbekistan. This initiative seeks to foster scientific collaboration and contribute to addressing environmental challenges in the region.

    In the realm of tourism, the President proposed the creation of a single visa-free tourism space called "Gulf - Central Asia". This initiative aims to simplify travel between the regions, promote tourism, and foster cultural exchange. The proposal to hold a forum of leading tour operators in Khiva, declared the Tourism Capital of the Islamic World in 2024, further illustrates the commitment to developing the tourism sector.

    President of Uzbekistan also, emphasis on the joint struggle against Islamophobia within the Organization of Islamic Cooperation demonstrates a dedication to promoting mutual respect and understanding among different cultures and religions. By advocating for stronger cooperation in countering terrorism, extremism, radicalism, and drug trafficking, President Mirziyoyev highlights the shared interest in ensuring regional and global security.

    Moreover, his attention to the peace process in Afghanistan reflects his recognition of the significance of addressing regional challenges. By urging both regions to actively draw the world community's attention to Afghanistan's problems, he aims to garner international support and aid in alleviating the hardships faced by the Afghan people.

    Daryo earlier mentioned that the President's meeting with the Crown Prince and Prime Minister of Saudi Arabia, followed by his visit to Mecca to perform a religious rite.
