The European Union authorizes the deployment of €1bn from the European Peace Fund to Ukraine, DW reports.
The strategy will enable EU nations to reimburse the cost of armaments shipped to Ukraine between February 9 and May 31, 2023, either covering current inventories or prioritizing orders.
This is the first phase of the strategy, which involves delivering firearms to Ukraine from member nations' stocks, negotiating new agreements for ammunition manufacturing, boosting production capacity, and shipping 1mn of 155mm artillery shells to Ukraine by 2023.
Josep Borrell, the EU's High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, referred to the agreement as historic and underlined the EU's backing of Ukraine's right to self-defense against Russian aggression.
Earlier, Ukraine received €4.6bn in military aid from the European Peace Fund. The fund, which was set up in 2021, intends to assist EU military and defense allies in conflict prevention, peacekeeping, and improving international security and stability.
