Uzbekistan Railways is set to purchase 40 high-speed electric trains, according to Makhmudjon Takhirov, head of the logistics and marketing department of the state company. Fazil Sharipov, head of Uzrailpass, a subsidiary of Uzbekistan Railways, confirmed the news on December 7, stating that a tender for the purchase has already been announced.
The new electric trains will serve key routes including Tashkent-Angren, Tashkent-Bekabad, Tashkent-Keles, and Tashkent-Jizzakh. Details regarding delivery dates and the commissioning of the trains will be released following the completion of the tender process.
This move follows the recent introduction of a modern electric train, the EP3D, manufactured by Russian company Transmashholding, which began running between Tashkent and Khodjikent on December 3. The train, which can carry 586 passengers and reach speeds of up to 120 km/h, represents a step in the country’s railway modernization efforts.
On December 6, President Shavkat Mirziyoyev took a ride on the new electric train and issued instructions to straighten the winding sections of the Tashkent-Khodjikent line to improve travel frequency. He also directed that the areas along the railway be included in the national renovation program.
In 2022, Uzbekistan Railways held a tender for the purchase of 34 electric trains, with the supplier tasked with training drivers and maintenance personnel.
