Uzbekistan has officially named two previously unnamed mountain peaks “Muzqoya” and “Qirqqiz” under a government decision, with the 4,360-metre Muzqoya peak located in the G‘elon section of the Hisor State Reserve in Kashkadarya Region.
The peak had long been referred to locally as an “unnamed peak” and had not previously received an official name despite several proposals. According to Hisor State Reserve head Qahramon Normurodov, it was named Muzqoya (literally translated as Ice Rock) because its surrounding area is completely covered with ice.
The Hisor State Reserve covers more than 81,000 hectares and contains dozens of peaks ranging from 2,500 to 4,387 metres in elevation. At 4,360 metres, Muzqoya is among the highest peaks in the reserve. The reserve administration has also conducted an inventory of natural features in the area and submitted proposals to the Cabinet of Ministers to name 38 natural sites.
Another previously unnamed peak in Jizzakh Region’s Bakhmal District has been named Qirqqiz (literally translated as Forty Girls). The peak is located in the Turkestan mountain range between the Goralashsoy and Kolsuv streams.
The Cabinet of Ministers adopted a decision on July 9, 2026, to bring the names of certain mountain ranges, mountains, peaks, gorges, passes and caves into line with the rules and norms of the state language and assign new names where necessary.
The decision provides for the regulation and renaming of a total of 124 geographical features across Uzbekistan.
