President of Uzbekistan Shavkat Mirziyoyev and President of Germany Frank-Walter Steinmeier held high-level talks in Tashkent following an official welcome ceremony at the Kuksaroy residence, focusing on the further development of bilateral cooperation across political, economic, educational, and cultural spheres.
The German president arrived in Uzbekistan on an official visit on June 17, where he was received by President Mirziyoyev. Following the official ceremony, which included the playing of the national anthems, an inspection of the honor guard, and introductions of official delegations, the two leaders began negotiations in both narrow and expanded formats.
The discussions centered on strengthening political dialogue, expanding trade and investment cooperation, and enhancing cultural and humanitarian exchanges between Uzbekistan and Germany. The parties reviewed the current state of bilateral relations and considered opportunities for further cooperation in priority sectors.
Economic cooperation featured prominently during the talks. According to information discussed at the meeting, bilateral trade exceeded $1.4bn in 2025 and has increased by a further 5% since the beginning of the current year. German investment in Uzbekistan’s economy has reached approximately $2bn.
The leaders also reviewed the outcomes of the Days of German Economy and the 10th meeting of the Uzbek-German Business Council, held in Tashkent in May. Those events resulted in the signing of investment and trade agreements valued at more than $1bn.
Education and cultural cooperation were also discussed. More than 400,000 students in Uzbekistan are currently studying the German language, while over 2,000 Uzbek students are enrolled at German universities. The parties noted the growing role of academic cooperation following the first Uzbek-German Universities Forum held last year.
An additional development in educational cooperation was the recent agreement signed with a consortium of German universities to establish the Uzbek-German University of Applied Sciences in Samarkand.
The two presidents reaffirmed their interest in expanding cooperation across a range of sectors, including industry, energy, green economy projects, transport and logistics, mining, textiles, pharmaceuticals, agriculture, education, and healthcare.
They also welcomed the implementation of new joint initiatives in the automotive sector, household chemicals production, logistics, and workforce training. Support was expressed for holding the second Forum of Universities and the third Uzbek-German Medical Forum in Tashkent.
In addition to bilateral issues, the leaders exchanged views on regional and international developments and discussed cooperation within multilateral frameworks, including the Central Asia–Germany platform.
At the conclusion of the talks, the parties agreed to prepare a comprehensive roadmap aimed at ensuring the implementation of agreements reached during the visit and advancing cooperation across key areas of the bilateral agenda.
