Uzbekistan's Consulate General in New York has urged Uzbek citizens residing in the United States to strictly observe American laws and respect local customs, following reports of alleged legal violations involving individuals of Uzbek origin.
In a public statement, the consulate noted that recent media reports and discussions on social media have increasingly referenced incidents involving certain Uzbek citizens or people of Uzbek descent who may have been connected to violations of U.S. laws.
The diplomatic mission called on citizens to respect U.S. legislation, local traditions, cultural norms and generally accepted standards of public conduct while residing in the country.
According to the statement, any violation of the law carries personal responsibility for the individual involved but can also negatively affect public perceptions of the broader Uzbek community in the United States.
The consulate emphasized that many Uzbeks are successfully contributing to American society through education, business and professional activities, and warned that unlawful actions by a small number of individuals could undermine the reputation of the wider community.
Officials also noted that public and media attention toward Uzbekistan and its citizens tends to increase during major international events and sporting competitions, making responsible behavior particularly important.
The statement urged citizens to comply with legal requirements, act responsibly and avoid conduct that could result in legal consequences or damage the reputation of Uzbekistan and fellow compatriots abroad.
The Consulate General added that it remains ready to provide necessary consular and legal assistance to Uzbek citizens within the scope of its authority.
