The United States has imposed visa restrictions on Uzbek nationals accused of facilitating illegal immigration to the U.S., the Department of State announced.
The measures apply to executives and senior employees of two visa services companies based in Uzbekistan. According to the Department, the companies organized travel services primarily for individuals seeking to enter the United States unlawfully.
The restrictions were introduced under Section 212(a)(3)(C) of the Immigration and Nationality Act, which authorizes denial of entry to individuals whose activities could have serious adverse foreign policy consequences for the United States.
Investigations found that certain individuals in Uzbekistan coordinated transit routes for foreign nationals, including minors, intending to migrate illegally to the United States. These routes reportedly involved transportation through airports and border crossings to transit points in Central America. Many later attempted to enter U.S. territory unlawfully and were detained.
In its statement, the Department of State said the United States will not tolerate attempts to undermine its national security or immigration laws and will ensure accountability for those profiting from illegal migration. It added that authorities will continue efforts to combat human trafficking networks and protect U.S. borders.
The United States also expressed appreciation for cooperation with the Government of Uzbekistan in efforts to counter criminal networks facilitating illegal immigration.
Earlier it was reported that Uzbekistan coordinated the repatriation of nearly 700 citizens from the United States, including 44 individuals returned in one operation, reflecting ongoing cooperation between the two governments on migration management.
