Transit cargo volumes between Azerbaijan and Turkmenistan have continued to grow, reaching over 1mn tons in the first half of 2025 and surpassing 2mn tons in 2024.

The trend was highlighted during the 8th meeting of the Joint Intergovernmental Commission on Economic and Humanitarian Cooperation held in Baku. The session was co-chaired by Azerbaijan’s Minister of Economy Mikayil Jabbarov and Nokerguly Atagulyev, Deputy Chairman of Turkmenistan’s Cabinet of Ministers.
Building on the momentum in regional connectivity, the two sides discussed opportunities to deepen cooperation in trade, energy, industry, agriculture, and investment.
“The strengthening of the strategic partnership between Azerbaijan and Turkmenistan offers significant potential for the dynamic development of our economic relations,” Jabbarov noted in a post on X (formerly Twitter).

The meeting also emphasized joint efforts to enhance the East–West transport corridor, boost efficiency of the Middle Corridor, and explore the prospects of the Zangezur Corridor.
Turkmen investors were encouraged to engage more actively in Azerbaijan’s economy. Currently, 75 Turkmen-funded companies operate in the country, with activity spanning construction, industry, transport, trade, and services.
The Turkmen delegation was briefed on Azerbaijan’s favorable business and investment environment, including opportunities in the Alat Free Economic Zone and joint industrial parks.
Officials on both sides reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening bilateral ties through increased economic engagement and infrastructure development.
