President Emomali Rahmon of Tajikistan met with Lieutenant General Muhammad Asim Malik, the Director General of Pakistan's Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI), on December 30 in Dushanbe. The meeting, as reported on the official website of the Tajik presidency, focused on enhancing Tajikistan-Pakistan relations, particularly in regional peace, security, and bilateral cooperation.
During the discussion, President Rahmon expressed satisfaction with the political relations between the two countries and highlighted the mutual trust that underpins their partnership. Both sides emphasized the importance of continued collaboration in addressing common security challenges, including terrorism, extremism, radicalism, drug trafficking, and transnational crime. Regular interactions between relevant agencies of both nations were noted as a valuable aspect of their partnership.
Background on Lt Gen Muhammad Asim Malik
Lieutenant General Muhammad Asim Malik assumed his role as the Director General of the ISI on September 30, 2024, succeeding Lieutenant General Nadeem Anjum. Before this appointment, Lt Gen Malik served as Adjutant General at the General Headquarters in Rawalpindi and held various leadership positions, including commanding the Infantry Division in Balochistan and the Infantry Brigade in Waziristan.
A decorated officer, Lt Gen Malik received the Sword of Honor during his training and has held teaching positions at National Defense University (NDU) and Command and Staff College Quetta. He is also a graduate of Fort Leavenworth in the United States and the Royal College of Defense Studies in the United Kingdom.
