By 2028, the Almalyk Mining and Metallurgical Combine (AMMC) is projected to produce 400,000 tons of copper, 50 tons of gold, and 270 tons of silver annually, positioning it as one of the largest industrial complexes in the global mining and metallurgy sector.
This expansion is part of a larger investment project underway at Almalyk, which produced 148,000 tons of copper, more than 17 tons of gold, and 162 tons of silver last year. Backed by $1.1bn in investments, the combine exported products worth $662mn in 2023.
On October 15, President Shavkat Mirziyoyev visited the "Yoshlik-1" mine and inspected the construction of the third copper beneficiation plant at AMMC. The "Yoshlik-1" mine, which spans 11,000 hectares, is a key component of this expansion. It contains 65mn tons of ore reserves annually, rich in 13 types of precious and rare metals, including copper, gold, silver, and molybdenum.
The third copper beneficiation plant, which started construction in 2021, is a $4.6bn project that includes the mine's excavation, factory construction, and supporting infrastructure. With advanced equipment sourced from the USA, Germany, China, and other countries, the plant is expected to process 60mn tons of ore annually in its first phase, generating 917,000 tons of copper and 2,500 tons of molybdenum concentrates, while creating 5,600 new jobs.
President Mirziyoyev also reviewed the logistics and technological advancements in the new factory, where conveyor systems are designed to streamline operations and reduce costs. The second phase of development will triple the plant's capacity to 160mn tons of ore per year.
As global demand for copper rises—projected to increase by 40% by 2030 due to the growing electric vehicle and renewable energy sectors—AMMC is set to become a major supplier on the world stage. With estimated copper reserves of 45mn tons and over 5,000 tons of gold, Almalyk's output will remain critical for years to come.
In addition to boosting metal production, the project is stimulating the development of related industries. Six factories have been launched to supply metal structures for the construction of the beneficiation plant, while advancements in engineering, software, and vocational training are driving local innovation.
During his visit, President Mirziyoyev also toured the "Enter Steel" mechanical repair enterprise, where he was briefed on new equipment and ongoing industrial developments. The combined efforts of these projects are expected to create more than 11,000 high-tech jobs and raise the annual production value of AMMC to nearly $8bn by the end of the decade.
