Kazakhstan is increasing its grain exports by rail in 2024, with significant growth in volumes, according to Railway Supply. The national railway operator, Kazakhstan Temir Zholy (KTZ), transported over 5.2mn tons of grain from January to August, with 4mn tons destined for foreign markets.
Central Asia remains the primary destination, receiving 2.5mn tons of grain, while China imported approximately 1.2mn tons. Notably, shipments of processed grain products to China surged by 70%, reaching nearly 500,000 tons. Kazakhstan’s expanding trade cooperation with China opens new opportunities for both nations.
In addition to grain, Kazakhstan also saw a positive rise in rail shipments of rolled steel, which increased by 17.4% to 2.3mn tons. Rolled steel exports reached 1.8mn tons, marking a 20% increase compared to the same period last year, further underscoring Kazakhstan's growing role in international markets.
Starting September 20, KTZ plans large-scale grain deliveries, utilizing about 12,000 grain wagons, with 6,000 wagons dedicated for shipments to Black Sea and Baltic ports. Bauyrzhan Urinbasarov, KTZ’s Managing Director, emphasized that these efforts will ensure uninterrupted grain exports at significant volumes.
Kazakhstan's agriculture sector is currently experiencing a strong harvest, with 10.8mn tons of grain collected from 7,400 hectares, accounting for 44% of the total agricultural area. The average yield stands at 14.6 centners per hectare, with 1.5mn tons of grain already delivered to elevators, demonstrating the sector's resilience and capacity to overcome external challenges.
