In a step towards renewable energy development in Kyrgyzstan, Rosatom has officially commenced the construction of a 100 MW wind power plant in the Issyk-Kul region's Ton district. The project aims to harness the area's abundant wind potential, marking a milestone in the country’s renewable energy sector.
The foundation stone-laying ceremony took place in the Kok-Moinok hamlet, near the shores of Lake Issyk-Kul, with prominent officials in attendance, including Akylbek Zhaparov, Chairman of the Cabinet of Ministers of Kyrgyzstan, and Alexey Overchuk, Deputy Chairman of the Government of Russia.
This major investment project, spearheaded by Rosatom Renewable Energy, envisions an annual production of 290mn kWh of clean energy. The facility's construction is set to be completed within 12 months.
During the ceremony, Zhaparov highlighted Kyrgyzstan’s untapped renewable energy potential, noting that despite the country enjoying over 300 sunny days per year and having a strong tradition of wind energy in local folklore, it has yet to fully embrace wind, solar, and biogas technologies. The construction of this wind power plant is a significant step toward fulfilling the United Nations' Sustainable Development Goals, he added.
Zhaparov also recalled a similar milestone when a capsule was laid for the construction of a 300 MW solar power plant in Toru-Aygyr, another village in the Issyk-Kul region. That project is being led by Kyrgyz Bishkek Solar and Russian Unigreen Energy companies.
Over the past two years, the Kyrgyz government has launched several key projects in the energy sector. This includes the construction of the Kulanak and Orto-Tokoy hydropower plants and the completion of the Bala-Saruu plant, along with several smaller hydropower projects. The modernization of the At-Bashi hydropower plant has been completed, and work continues on upgrading the Toktogul and Uch-Kurgan facilities. Internationally, Kyrgyzstan is progressing with the CASA-1000 project, which involves the construction of new power transmission lines.
Deputy Prime Minister Overchuk congratulated Kyrgyzstan on this new development, expressing confidence in the successful completion and operation of the wind power plant. The project is expected to contribute significantly to local employment and the region’s economic growth, both during and after the construction phase.
