In a recent roundtable discussion, the Swiss company AFRY presented various options for the dam height of the Kambarata-1 Hydropower Plant (HPP). This marks a step in the ongoing preparation for the project's development.
The feasibility study for the Kambarata-1 HPP is set to be completed by May 2025. The discussions featured representatives from Kyrgyzstan, Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, the World Bank, and a group of international experts.
Trilateral agreements have been signed by the Ministries of Energy from Kyrgyzstan, Kazakhstan, and Uzbekistan, highlighting the collaborative effort to advance the project.
“This is a unique case when three countries of the region come to mutual understanding and support of the project. We are convinced the joint work will result in a higher quality project that will provide Central Asia with clean and renewable energy, improve the hydropower regime, and strengthen regional cooperation," Deputy Chairman of the Cabinet of Ministers Bakyt Torobaev praised the cooperation among the three countries.
Minister of Energy Taalaibek Ibraev emphasized the progress made in preparing for construction. Key developments include the completion of a 1,338-meter-long transport tunnel and ongoing construction of concrete roads. The overhead power transmission line and substation are expected to be finished by the end of 2024. Construction of a bridge across the Naryn River and a workers' camp is also underway. All preparatory works are slated for completion by May 2025.
Maksudjon Safarov, a senior energy specialist at the World Bank, noted that the Bank is funding the comprehensive preparation of the project, including the development of the feasibility study by AFRY.
In July, World Bank’s Board of Executive Directors approved an additional $13.6mn in financing to support the ongoing $5mn Technical Assistance for the Kambarata-1 HPP project in the Kyrgyz Republic. This project aims to aid the Kyrgyz government in preparing the Kambarata-1 HPP project to be environmentally, technically, financially, and commercially sustainable.
