Kyrgyzstan recorded a 15% increase in tomato imports in 1H24, reflecting significant growth in both volume and value. According to the National Statistical Committee, the country imported 18,269 tons of tomatoes between January and June 2024, with a total value of nearly $12mn. This marks a notable rise from the same period in 2023 when imports reached almost 18,000 tons, valued at $10.4mn.
Turkmenistan remained the dominant supplier, contributing 82% of Kyrgyzstan’s total tomato imports during this period. Specifically, Turkmenistan exported 14,962 tons of tomatoes to Kyrgyzstan, amounting to $8.8mn. Uzbekistan was the second-largest supplier, providing 2,484 tons of tomatoes worth $2.1mn. In addition to these two major suppliers, Kyrgyzstan also imported tomatoes from China, Iran, and Kazakhstan.
Kazakhstan's earlier reports highlighted the return of approximately 30 tons of tomatoes to exporting countries due to concerns over a dangerous virus. Of this, 4.2 tons were sent back to Uzbekistan, while 56.1 tons were returned to Turkmenistan.
Since the start of 2024, a total of 497,624 tons of imported goods that did not meet phytosanitary standards were intercepted and returned to designated phytosanitary control points, reflecting ongoing vigilance in maintaining food safety standards in the region.
